CHOICE OF WORDS:
(1.) Прилагательное near не употребляется атрибутивно, т. е. для определения существительного. Для атрибутивного употребления используются лексические единицы nearby или the nearest: a nearby village ближайшая деревня; the nearest stop ближайшая остановка; the nearest shop ближний магазин. (2.) Пространственно-временные отношения передаются также прилагательным close. Close в отлитие от near помимо пространственно-временных отношений: the exam is close скоро экзамен; the book is close at hand книга под рукой; характеризует человеческие отношения: close relations близкие отношения; close relatives близкие родственники; close friends близкие друзья; brother and sister are very close брат и сестра очень близки между собой; close cooperation тесное сотрудничество. Close также характеризует тщательность деятельности: close examination тщательное исследование; close supervision пристальное руководство; close scrutiny придирчивое расследование. (3.) В отдельных пространственно-временных ситуациях прилагательное close оказывается эквивалентом русских наречий степени почти и близко: We were close to signing the treaty. Мы уже почти подписали договор. Not exactly, but you are close. Не совсем, но вы почти правы/почти угадали. I sat close to the stage. Я сидел близко к сцене. /Я сидел почти у самой сцены
